Issue Nº.001 — Spring 2026
Cloud Transcoding Quarterly
Vol. 8 / Compare

vs the
lone
box.

— The short version

HandBrake is the best free transcoder one machine can run — genuinely. This comparison starts where your second machine does, and where a deliverable spec stops accepting an MP4.

— Side by side

The differences
that decide it.

Both columns describe what actually ships — theirs from what they publish, ours from the product. Nothing guessed, nothing padded.

What it isA distributed encode farm — master + workers, self-hostedA free, open-source transcoder for one machine
PriceSolo free forever on one worker; paid tiers buy fleet ceiling, $29–$999/moFree, forever, everywhere — its genuine strength

— Candor

Where HandBrake wins.

It is free, open source, twenty years mature, and brilliant at the one-box job — ripping, shrinking, converting for the web. If you never outgrow one machine and never owe anyone a ProRes master with QC evidence, keep it and pay nobody. Our Solo tier costs the same (nothing) — the real fork is the second machine, and the first deliverable spec.

— The honest fork

Pick by the room
you run.

Choose HandBrake if…

One machine, personal or small-channel work, web-codec outputs, and zero budget — HandBrake is the right tool and needs no defending.

Choose TRNSCODE if…

The room has more machines than the encode is using, clients expect mezzanine masters with evidence attached, and the queue has become a schedule problem instead of a settings problem.

If HandBrake ships something that makes a row here outdated, tell us — info@trnscode.com — and the row gets fixed. These pages are only worth keeping if both columns stay true.

— Questions

Asked before
switching.

Is TRNSCODE just HandBrake with networking?

No — it is a different layer. HandBrake is an excellent encoder front-end for one machine. TRNSCODE is pipeline infrastructure: a master that chunks work across a fleet, deterministic distributed encodes that stitch back byte-identical, verification evidence per job, and the ingest, review and NLE workflows around them.

HandBrake is free. Why would I pay?

On one machine, don't — our Solo tier is also free, forever, and you can run both. You pay when the fleet does: paid tiers only raise how many workers can register. The moment a second and third machine join the encode, flat fleet pricing is what you are buying.

Can they coexist?

Comfortably. Plenty of rooms keep HandBrake for quick personal one-offs and point the shared watch folder at TRNSCODE for anything with a deadline, a spec, or a client attached.
